Shah (Imam) Mosque
In the Southern side of Imam/Naqsh-e Jahan Square, Imam Mosque is situated which is one of the most beautiful mosques of the Islamic Era. This mosque was built by the order of Shah Abbas I and was constructed by Ali Akbar Esfahani.
First, the main entrance and the entrance forecourt with two exterior minarets were built. The doors of the mosque, designed by gold and silver sheets date back to the reign of Shah Safi, successor of Shah Abbas I. Inside the mosque there is a central yard with four porches and two subsidiary yards. There are two domes on the Southern part of the mosque which are 12 meters apart.
The height of these domes from the ground floor of the mosque is 50 meters. The inscriptions in the mosque were written by famous calligraphers of the Safavid Era like Alireza Abbasi, Abdol Baghi Tabrizi, Mohammad Saleh Esfahani and Mohammad Reza Emami. The walls, domes, minarets and interior and exterior arches are covered with polychrome tiles. The design of these tiles are flowers and bushes that can be seen in mysterious ways.
