Shah-Abdol-Azim Shrine
Shah-Abdol-Azim Shrine
This shrine belongs to one of the descendants of Imam Hassan. It is located in Ray city, south of Tehran. This shrine dates back to the third century and is one of the famous pilgrimage places for Iranians.
Shah-Abdol-Azim Shrine was first built in the 9th century AD. The main gate was built by the order of one of the kings of Buyid Dynasty.
The base of the shrine is quadrilateral and each side is about 8 meters. Just like every Seljuq building, this one also has four arches on the four walls of the room. On the upper floor there is an octagonal room and on that is a sixteen-sided room. The main dome is situated above this room.
Every room is designed with beautiful mirror works. The main renovation was done during the reign of Tahmasp I. Inside the shrine and the porch date back to Safavid Era. Another renovation of the building was done during the Qajar Era. The gold cover of the dome was done by the order of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar in 1835 AD. Many famous people of Iran, like Naser al-Din Shah, were buried in this building or in Tooti Garden.
There was a cemetery added to this Shrine for Reza Shah Pahlavi and throughout time many of the relatives of Reza Shah were buried there. After the revolution this cemetery was destroyed by the people of Iran.
