Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque
Another mosque is located on the Eastern side of Imam (Naqsh-e Jahan) Square. This mosque was built during the reign of Shah Abbas I, a king of Safavid Dynasty. At the same time the square and buildings around it were constructed.
The function of this building was for people to pray and be taught by the late Sheikh Lotfollah who was a great scholar and a clergy in Lebanon. The construction of the mosque started in 1011 AH and ended in 1028 AH. There is a bedchamber in the basement of the mosque. Due to the function of the mosque (scientific and religious) there was no need for a yard or minarets.
The dome is situated on eight zigzag shaped arches and the edge of these arches are designed by cyan tiles.
The interior of the mosque, especially its sanctuary, is appealing due to the magnificent polychrome tile work. There are two inscriptions in the sanctuary of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque and on them it is written: The work of the little and needy of god's mercy, Mohammad Reza and Master Hossein Esfahani.
This phrasr means that the great masters, artists and builders were never arrogant of their work and they needed the mercy of their lord.
